From Our Families

A Community That Makes a Difference

Choosing St. Joseph's has been one of the best decisions we have made for our family. The smaller class sizes and individualized attention have made a tremendous difference in both their academic growth and confidence. The teachers genuinely care about the students and go above and beyond to help them succeed.

Nicole May, SJCS Parent

From the beginning, we wanted a school that would not only provide academic excellence but also help shape our child into a well-rounded individual with strong values, faith, and character. St. Joseph has truly provided that for our family. The teachers and staff genuinely care about each student's success, both academically and personally.

The Pfeifer Family, SJCS Parents

Our daughter is looking forward to middle school at St. Joseph. She loves the experiments in the new science program, she's in an advanced math class, and her writing has improved a lot this past year. The bullying problem that we had at our old public school doesn't exist here. She is happier than she's ever been!

St. Joseph Parent

Great academics and high standards for personal conduct — we love that our son doesn't come home with bad habits like dirty language or inappropriate humor. They also have a wonderful in-house extended care program that we've been very impressed with.

Still Have Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of school is St. Joseph Catholic School?

St. Joseph is a Catholic, parish-based school in the heart of downtown Salem, serving families from across the Mid-Willamette Valley. As the educational outreach of St. Joseph Parish in the Archdiocese of Portland, we pair strong academics with daily prayer, the sacraments, and the formation of personal virtue — guiding students to know, love, and serve God. Our mission is simple: to form saints, one child at a time.

What grades do you serve?

We serve PreK-3 and PreK-4 through Kindergarten and on to 8th grade. PreK-3 meets two half-days a week and PreK-4 meets three half-days a week, while Kindergarten through 8th grade follows a full daily schedule. We have wonderful openings across grade levels — and especially welcome new Kindergarten families.

Where are you located, and how far do families travel?

We're located downtown at 373 Winter St. NE in Salem, Oregon. Most of our families come from North Salem, Keizer, Mt. Angel, and Albany — generally within about 20 miles, or a 30-minute drive.

What makes St. Joseph different?

We're a small, close-knit, and diverse community where every child is known by name and teachers build real relationships with each student and family. The Catholic faith isn't just one class — it's woven through everything we do, from daily prayer to the way we form character and virtue. Families consistently tell us it's the personal attention and the faith-filled environment that set us apart.

How much is tuition?

Tuition is $7,500 per year for Kindergarten through 8th grade. PreK-4 (three half-days a week) is $4,500 and PreK-3 (two half-days a week) is $3,000. A $200 enrollment fee applies. We're happy to walk you through all the details when you come in for a tour.

Do you offer financial aid or tuition discounts?

Yes. Need-based financial aid is available, and we accept aid applications year-round — we simply ask that requests be submitted by the end of January when possible. Registered, active Catholic families may also qualify for a $1,150-per-child parish subsidy: registered St. Joseph parishioners are considered automatically, and families registered at other Archdiocese of Portland parishes can request it through their home parish.

What is the admissions process?

It starts with a simple inquiry. From there we'll schedule a tour with our principal or vice principal, including a short visit and assessment for your child. If it's a good fit, you'll be invited to apply online through the FACTS Family Portal, complete any financial-aid request, and finalize your tuition agreement. We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the year.

What are faith and student life like?

Faith is at the center of each day — through prayer, participation in the sacraments, and a steady focus on growing in virtue and character. Alongside that, students receive a rigorous, well-rounded academic education in a joyful, supportive community where they build friendships that last.

Do we have to be Catholic to attend?

St. Joseph is proudly and unapologetically Catholic, and our faith shapes everything we do. At the same time, we warmly welcome families of all backgrounds who are seeking a Christ-centered education and a community grounded in faith, virtue, and strong academics.
